Ha ha! Way to go Apple!!!! Kill the competition any way you can!!

Apple is doing everyone a favor saving them from the mistake of getting a RIM tablet.

I'm sure Apple appreciates your enthusiasm to kill the competition. I have no doubt they will repay your gratitude by allowing you to pay more for their products.

(qoute above me). Let alone isn't it that Apple orders for such an amount of processors for such a price (discounted over market price), and then puts those in laptops. So what I mean it really doesn't matter if Yonah is reduced does it?Apple probably has a JUST-IN-TIME arrangement with Intel that keeps an obsolete processor inventory from ever building up. This would be pared with an auto price reduction scheme as Intel lowers prices to the public. Just guessing.

Its absolute crap that a ~$600 Macmini has these options standard, and yet Apples $4000 top of the line machine doesnt. Unacceptable.
No, it means that the base Mini would be $530 instead of $600 if wireless wasn't standard. And the base Mac Pro would be $2570 instead of $2500 if it did. At least you have the choice on the Pro.

Mac is still a success nonetheless...

Will be the same for the iPhone. Apple is happy with 2 models on 2 providers in the USA...

Mac still doesn't have the software selection of Windows. Mac succeeds in spite of it's lack of developers because owning a Mac became "cool" at some point in the past 15 years. Microsoft shooting themselves in the head with Vista helped as well.

Can the iPhone succeed when devs start to divert resources to Android development? Will the "cool" factor of owning an iPhone save it when the next "Angry Birds" type game is only available on Android? Or when major corporations develop Apps for their employees that require them to own Android phones (as happened with DOS/Windows back in the 80s and 90s)?

Apple is happy now because they're making money. The gravy train will end when the balance reaches a tipping point -- as the PC market did -- where it simply isn't profitable to divert resources away from the majority market share to develop for the minority market share.

Ehh, purposeful or not (as a sabotage)...not good news for iPad competition:( Which isnt good news for us iPad users...Apple needs constant pressure to release revolutionary products.

I do wonder if this is true. They may need the pressure to upgrade specs but the revolutionary products seem to come because that is their passion.

I fear the only server we will get will be an iPhone server with App store only deployments. Those things make money for Apple and would be similarly as emasculating as showing up with a MacMini for your data centers.

Well I don't think anyone actually USED the Xserve in datacenters anyway... Why would YOU? Seriously you don't need a boutique operating system on a server that's on 24/7/365 serving html/php/mysql with the only downtime is an occasional reboot for software updates.

The people who used Xserves had a few of them at most and could not even justify racking them. Most Xserves ended up on desks or maybe thrown next to a bunch of PC servers in a companies IT department for the "crazy Mac guys" in advertising/production. Really if you look at the Xserve in general you see the only real penetration was in the TV Station/Video Editing/Movie/Education/Advertising fields.. Not "Data Centers"

So a 3u Mac Pro will work just fine in the TV Station/Video Editing/Movie/Education/Advertising "Server Rooms" where they can fill up a rack with their 10, 3u servers and do what they need to.

I don't think your post is quite accurate. For large deployments of Mac clients, the Xserve was a wonderful integrated management solution and it fit in the data center along with all the other servers uses for other purposes. No one really wants homogeneous environnements in a data center and Xserve served as diversity, filling their niche well.

Use them to serve HTML/PHP/MySQL ? A waste of an Xserve. Use them for SUS, netboot, Opendirectory ? Wonderful. Also, many of those TV Station/Video Editing/Movie/Education/Advertising fields have data centers in case you didn't know. It's not like everyone operates out of a closet.

Heck, a few lifetimes ago when I worked small businesses, we were selling racks and properly wiring and racking systems for businesses with 50 employees and 5 servers. We were adding in UPSes and redundancy. I built a site-to-site VPN between our own surveillance network and everyone of our customer's networks to monitor services remotely using a Cisco based solution. Yes, about 1k$ worth of networking equipment for small business that did nothing else than check that their filesystems weren't full or that the database server didn't go down. And they paid monthly fees on that of that for the service.

Size of a business means nothing, it's the value of the data that a business manages that dictates their server needs. If a company has 5 employees but their data is worth over 10 million $, they aren't going to host it on a 1k$ PC thrown in a corner with a failing fan on the CPU. They are going to invest in a proper solution.

You have to have worked in IT to understand the implications here. This is not a Xserve replacement and if Apple goes through with a "rackable" Mac Pro, it's not going to be billed as an Xserve replacement nor are the buyers that bought Xserves going to be using that. It's not like you couldn't just use OS X Server on Mac Pros before Apple introduced the joke of the "Mac Pro Server". The thing already existed.

    I'll guess 12", 15" and 17". I read somewhere they're expecting a 12".

The 12" is a unverified rumor to be taken with a large grain of salt at this point. I would think they would just soup up a MB and sell it as a MBP before they made a 12" again. Of course, you never know with apple.

I'm hoping for Apple to sell them. I think it is about time we break away form the buy into the plan get your phone deal. I would be willing to pay for a phone if it was of good quality and had usable features.. unlike the junk phones that I have had.. my current phone doesn't even have a working screen but since I was told it is my problem I decided why fix it? none of the options ever worked with my mac

This is not a question of Appleinsider being reliable, more a matter of rumor sites making a guess that is absolutely obvious. There is no way that Apple could _not_ use Merom in the future, since Intel will sell it at exactly the same price that it charges for Yonah today.
Well, Steve Jobs could always announce that Apple is transitioning to PPC G6 chips, and that the x86 reign is over ;)

This will definitely be the first iteration of the iPhone that I will pass on. It's certainly not much of an upgrade from the iPhone 4.

This model promises to be one that many will pass on.

    I certainly will.

Even though it's already well known that it will have a better antenna to fix the antennagate issue that most everyone denied.

The lack of a fresh new look will keep me away, especially retaining the tiny screen. Seems like Apples coasting this time around.

A faster processor? Big deal, who needs it, a waste of money just to pump up Apples coffers.

A true disappointment, this one is. I was so eager to dump my antennagate special.

I'd like to see Mac Minis start at $499, MacBooks & iMacs start at $999, MacBook Pro start out at $1499 and the Mac Pro at $1999. Maybe add a midtower mac at $1499. Don't know how likely this is, but just a thought

Citation needed. Especially in light of this 2 month old article :

Intel, Google Doubt ARM and Atom Have Chances in Servers (http://www.cpu-wars.com/2011/03/intel-google-doubt-arm-and-atom-have.html)

    http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/04/21/google-buys-agnilux-eyeing-processors/

The article doesn't mention the processor architecture, but it is really supposed to be ARM.

I know this is a rumor board, and this is just rumor. However, do other tire of these loose shots in the dark? I mean, I understand if they hear something, and want to get folks information. But why not try and do a little investigation, to be sure?

I dunno...guess I'm of the belief "I'll believe it when I see it"?

Semantics. Your argument boils down to the pain of change.

The cost of change. There's a difference.

Again, the real crux of your argument is that people are 'comfortable' with what they already know.

No, once again, it's not about comfort; it's about experience. I learned mostly SI units when I was in college, I'm quite comfortable with using those units - but the industry doesn't use those units. I learned, and became an expert in, the units used by the industry. You would ask millions of engineers, technicians, etc. to throw away years or even decades of experience simply to change a system that isn't broken.

Yes, it's a system that has its roots in the past, but the system still works. There's no compelling reason to change it. There's no efficiency to be gained.
