I don't even know why am I so excited about this since I always have my iPod classic with me.

Even though it would be awesome if iPhone had an external-cloud based space of 160 GB to substitute my loaded gem. That could seriously break the need for 256 GB SSDs in iPhones for us audiovores...

Now only if all my music would be on iTunes Store too....
    :apple:

Still lovin' my 2009 iMac.... best machine I've ever owned.

So do I ... got the 27" i5 in and am just LOVING it. Couldn't justify the i7 as few apps support hyperthreading, wonder if this is still true.

Use my beautiful machine mostly for photo editing. See no reason to update to any new iMac this time round. Found it's worth to upgrade computers every three years as the science progresses, and look already forward to upgrading end of 2012, when technology will really have changed enough since 2009 to make it all worth the new experience.

    Love you Apple!

I could care less about the streaming aspect of it. What I do want is a way to re-download purchases I made on iTunes in the event a song or something is accidentally deleted.

I'll say it again "App Store" is a generic term, I think everyone should be able to use it.. I hope Apple doesn't win this one.. If someone used "Mac App Store", completely understandable..

The very fact that all laptops contain mercury in their displays, the very fact that apple is one of the only computer companies that no longer sells mercury-laden CRT screens (As mentioned by another in an earlier post Thank you DELL!) makes this a complete and utter wank.

The whole point of Thunderbolt is you can daisy-chain devices (up to 6 I think), so one port goes a long way.

Besides the three-monitor doohickery on the 27", I struggle to see why 95% of people would need two ports often. But still, nice to have :)

The current implementation of TB requires that the Display be the last device in the chain. Ars Technica forums have a rumour it shall change (in the next version)

The only thing I desire in this direction is a way to delete and add the music/audiobooks I have on the fly without a computer. Anything else is icing on the cake.

As much as I love rumors approximating nearer and nearer some state of acuity, actually seeing the product a day ahead is a tad disspaointing. It reminds me of the late night when Time Canada unveiled the G4 iMac. Well it'll still be fun to watch me Opie tomorrow, especially since she's promoting iPods over the Dell Ditty she did a couple years back.

I thought it from the first post too.

We don't know how many accounts he registered here on MR in 08, and it doesn't really take that many postings to become a regular.

Unless you've purchased / converted music in Apple lossless format it IS way better quality.

95% of my music is from my massive CD collection and it has been ripped to Apple Lossless. Does Sonos sell lossless music? If not, WTF are you talking about? You're then comparing apples to oranges. You can just as easily make an Apple lossless library on iTunes as a Flac one for Sonos or XBMC or whatever the heck you prefer to use. One review of Sonos I read says it does not support WMA Lossless (which IS sold online via Music Giants) so that is moot as well.

As for the whole "AAC versus Lossless (of any kind)" thing, I will not even bother arguing about the sonic transparency of 256kbit VBR AAC (Lets just say I've never heard about anyone proving they could tell the difference in a double blind test. I'm well aware of "audiophile" tendencies as I used to be one until I realized 80% of it is snake-oil BS. I now buy what actually makes a difference (high quality speakers and room treatments) and I've never had anyone complain about either of my two systems). I did my own extensive testing between my lossless rips and 256 AAC and I could never tell the difference. For convenience sake, my own lossless library is archive only now. iTunes lets me handle mobile/home in a seamless manner by using only one library for both (something that would be useless with Sonos as it is clearly only home use. You can't play most lossless formats in the car whereas my old JVC and my new factory Subaru WRX player's USB ports handle AAC (as well as MP3 and WMA) just fine. There's nothing quite like taking up to 64GB of music on a USB stick with you on the road. It's like having a 1000 disc CD changer in the car.

Things have certainly changed after the PPC ->x86 transition.
Mac resale value will go down the drain, but that's great if you're the buyer not the seller. It's still much more exciting to be getting these furious CPU upgrades.

    I think I covered enough :)

What you've covered is a mishmash of things that Apple did and tried to infer it was because of the iPhone. When in reality, not much except the bringing of some iOS features back into MacOS X (which I agree with even if I won't use them all) has anything to do with the iPhone.

I think this is enough to show that Microsoft is unequivocally correct. The term has been in use for much longer than Apple's launching of the store and it has been ubiquitous in the computer industry for a long time.

The way to distinguish (if it needs to be done) between app stores is by saying the name of the app store before hand, ie the Apple App Store, the Amazon App Store, or the Microsoft App Store.

Examples of uses (Dvorak in his references to "killer app"):

    +1

I've owned an early 2009 Macbook Aluminum, an early 2009 MBP with 8GB of RAM, an I7 iMac, and a Mac Mini server to go along with various Windows machines over the years. My MBA is the best computer I've ever owned. Fabulous!

The 13 is terrific. I own the 11 inch MBA. Only 2 problems. Battery life is not nearly as good as your 13 (small footprint = small battery). Also, the lack of backlit keys really is a bummer. Typing in bed at night requires some guess work.

All of this is offset by the awesomeness of how easy it is to travel with this machine. Love the size and weight (lack thereof) vs. my 15 inch MBP.

Yes I have..The only difference is I'm including the recording part.

Well, one option would be for the video airTunes, to have an input + hardware Mpeg-2 encoding and stream it back to your computer onto your hard drive.

This would be awesome, especially for rich people who can buy an xserve with xsan to store all their stuff on ;-) One tiny box in the living room, one huge fileserver in a backroom.

But yes, you'd probably need to have Front Row or some such on the front end, on the video airTunes.

What else would you expect to hear? No company would just bow down and give up....

that's because samsung supplies all these companies with parts for their phones. Sue Samsung, risk getting the shaft on internals! We'll see what happens.

Samsung couldn't pull out on any existing deals, otherwise they'd be in breach of contract.

Thunderbolt will never replace USB because they serve different functions. You will never see low-bandwidth devices such as keyboard/mice/USB stick using thunderbolt because it doesn't make sense.

    [...]
Also I don't know if anyone mentioned it but one of the reasons Firewire never took off was because of royalty fees that need to be paid for implementing it. Thunderbolt has no royalties on it and this should help drive adoption.

From the looks of it Thunderbolt will be able to replace eSata, Firewire, and maybe Expresscards.
This almost identically mirrors USB/FW. The reason FW sputtered (and it did start to take off for a brief while) was USB2. USB2 isn't at all designed to handle the applications that FW does, but it's not a coincidence that USB2 was designed for raw bandwidth just greater than FW and that it was marketed as such, ignoring usability issues and true throughput.

USB2 won because it was almost good enough, vendors didn't want a second connector and all the power supply that went with FireWire, and the masses were never educated on what the limitations of USB were.

The original USB was just fine for mice and keyboards. USB2 was meant to undermine FireWire, and USB3 was meant to kill it. USB3 is an attempt to be one bus for all purposes, just like Thunderbolt is. You don't need two universal serial busses, and the buying public will stick with the logo they're most comfortable with.
